I finally get why I’ve heard “Don’t Stop Believing” played so much this summer. Seems like every time I’m in a supermarket, or a mall, or flipping through the radio, that song is on. And it baffled me. Until now. Turns out you can thank (or blame) “Glee.” The Journey anthem is the de facto theme song for the high school musical (lowercase) series, as I just found out.

Ever since its premiere episode aired as a preview after the “American Idol” finale in May, “Glee” has generated a ton of buzz, to the point where it’s probably the most hyped, anticipated show this fall. Fox re-aired the premiere Wednesday night (actually a director’s cut version), so I tuned in to see what all the fuss was about.

Apparently I lack a heart and soul, because it didn’t do much for me.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s good at what it does and I can appreciate that. It’s just that it wasn’t so good at keeping me interested. With the notable exception of the musical episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” I’m just not into musicals, and “Glee” wasn’t able to change that. Sorry.

There were parts I liked. Jane Lynch was hilarious, as usual, in every scene she was in as the iron-fisted cheerleading coach. Emma, the lovesick, germophobic teacher, was off the charts on the CQ scale (that’s Cute & Quirky), looking like a refugee from “Pushing Daisies.” And I mean that in the best way possible. The writing is witty and sharply satirical. And wow, those kids have some serious pipes.

Still, it didn’t grab me. Maybe it’s too cute and earnest and I’m too much of a bitter, jaded old grouch. Is it a show worth checking out? Sure. Between the familiar high school social dynamics, the clever satirical writing and the catchy singalongs, I can see the appeal to fans from across the viewer spectrum. I just won’t be adding it to my DVR schedule.

Fox will air the premiere episode again tonight (9 p.m.), which will include a live Twitter feed from cast members providing on-screen commentary. Kinda like a cable news crawl, I guess. Cool idea, very Web 2.0-ey. The season premiere (or really, second episode) airs next Wednesday (9 p.m., Fox), assuming Fox doesn’t bump it for President Obama’s 316th primetime news conference. Fox skipped the Obama speech that was up against “Idol” a few months back, and with the amount of money they’ve sunk into promoting “Glee,” count on them skipping this one too.

Here’s a teaser for the season. Hmmm, so are they just going to drop a certain word from Kanye’s “Gold Digger”?
