I’m drooling right now. I’ve found sports fan nirvana.

MLB Network, in business for only a few months, has already become THE essential viewing for baseball fans. Forget ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight,” this is where it’s at. Six nights a week, from around 3 p.m. to 10-ish, the network’s “MLB Tonight” is a running studio show with live look-ins to every game going on. It’s nothing short of spectacular.

Tired of ESPN covering only the Yankees and Red Sox? Go to MLB Network and get some in-depth analysis of the Royals game. Or drop in and watch the Marlins rally for a few runs. Or hear an extended interview with the Indians’ closer. It’s almost too much, a wholly complete information explosion of everything currently going on in baseball.

The game look-ins aren’t perfect, usually lasting only 3-5 minutes at a time because of network licensing rules. But it’s a heck of a lot more than the 20-second clips you’ll get on “SportsCenter,” and they’re pretty good at dropping into a game right when something interesting is happening.

The studio hosts aren’t bad at all. Lots of former players (Harold Reynolds, Sean Casey, Mitch Williams) dropping insight and no one as curmudgeonly annoying as Joe Morgan or Tim McCarver. These aren’t guys who just like to hear themselves talk. There’s some good analysis there.

For serious baseball fans, this is must-see TV. It’s a good thing I work nights, or else I’d probably be glued to MLB Network for a few hours a night.

Tonight of course in an exception to that. Gotta switch over in a few minutes to Game 6 of the Sharks’ playoff series against the Ducks. Have I ever mentioned how spectacular hockey looks in HD? Go Sharkies!
