Later, Leno, it’s Conan’s time now.

Tonight, Jay Leno will sign off as host of “The Tonight Show” after 17 years. Conan O’Brien will take over the show Monday, and will be Leno’s final guest tonight (11:30 p.m., NBC).

Don’t cry for Leno, it’s not like he’s going far. He’ll be back five nights a week in the fall for a primetime talk show that’ll probably destroy NBC as we know it (not that that’s an entirely bad thing).

I couldn’t tell you the last time I watched Leno. I don’t find him funny at all. He’s still doing Bill Clinton fat jokes, isn’t he? The show lacks spontaneity, his interviews are bland and his guests are as cutting edge as a bowling ball. Case in point: Leno’s final musical guest tonight will be James Taylor. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I was reading a top 10 list of Leno’s greatest moments somewhere online, and was struck by how dated they seemed: Hugh Grant coming clean, Bobcat Goldthwait lighting the couch on fire, the drunken “Cheers” cast, the Dancing Itos . . . .yeah, those were nice, but what have you done this century?

Conan will be a welcome breath of fresh air for that “The Tonight Show,” hopefully returning it to pop-culture relevance and certainly making it more vibrant. Can’t wait for Monday’s first show with Andy Richter at his side.

Here’s a clip of what Conan’s been up to:
