There’s been a lot of talk among TV critics this week about how Conan O’Brien’s ratings for “The Tonight Show” have slipped after one whole week and David Letterman has picked up more viewers. “Oh,” cry the media pundits, “Conan’s already in trouble, his show is too edgy, he needs more A-list guests.”

And to that I say: Pfffffft.

Let Letterman have Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington and the Jonas Brothers. They’re boring and predictable and have nothing to say. I love how B-listers are more willing to go out on a limb and push the envelope with Conan. His show thrives on spontaneity and outrageousness (see Joel McHale’s appearance last week). While Letterman’s busy giving Sarah Palin more free publicity, I’m quite content to sit back and enjoy Norm MacDonald and Jim Gaffigan and Neko Case.

There was a lot of speculation months ago about whether Conan would change his show, temper it down to be more palatable for a wider audience. It looks like he hasn’t, and I’m glad. This whole idea that the 11:30 timeslot is too early to be cutting-edge is ridiculous. “The Daily Show” (which airs at 11) has proved that. Hopefully, having Jay Leno on at 10 p.m. every night come September will get the tame, milquetoast chuckles out of the way early, leaving late-night to comedy with a bit more of an edge. (And hopefully that’ll free Letterman to regain his.)

Anyway, here’s Norm MacDonald’s appearance on Conan last night. His “Rock of Love” bit absolutely killed me.
