Watch it

“Modern Family” (9 p.m., ABC). Claire tries to foil a neighborhood speeder, and Cameron & Mitchell get an X-Man for a neighbor (guest James Marsden).

“Cougar Town” (9:30 p.m., ABC). Jules begins to have doubts about her relationship with Grayson (probably because he has beady eyes) and Andy takes a joke too far with Ellie. And then they all drink wine.

“Top Chef All-Stars” (10 p.m., Bravo). Tom Colicchio enters the fray, challenging the cheftestants in the Quickfire. Then they all go to Chinatown and create bad dim sum for local diners. Hmmm, wonder if Jamie will actually cook a dish tonight.

“24/7 Penguins-Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic” (10 p.m., replayed at 11 p.m., HBO). The conclusion of the excellent four-part hockey documentary, featuring Saturday’s super cool outdoor game under the lights at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

Record it

“Human Target” (8 p.m., Fox). A special two-hour “event” (meaning twice the explosions) as Chance’s ex comes back with a plea to rescue a colleague from a South American dictator. And in the B storyline, the crew helps an inept private eye  (Tony Hale, who I cannot envision as anyone other than Buster Bluth).

“MythBusters: Demolition Derby” (9 p.m., Discovery). Part 1 of a two-part special busting automotive myths (and thereby busting many, many automobiles).

Skip it

Just avoid CBS tonight. First it’s Paula Abdul’s “Live to Dance” (8 p.m.), then it’s the People’s Choice Awards (9 p.m.). Neither deserves to take up any part of your busy day.
