Watch this (week of March 24)

Basketball fans can bask in March Madness, but what’s out there for the rest of us? Here’s a look at some highlights. SUNDAY When we last left “The Walking Dead” (9 p.m., AMC), Andrea was facing an uncertain future and Rick was weighing a deal to turn Michonne over to the Governor. MONDAY “Revolution” (10 p.m., NBC) returns. What will Miles and crew do now that Monroe has helicopters and  a serious ax to grind? Tonight, we’ll find out that… Read More »

Watch this (week of Feb. 10)

SUNDAY “The Grammys” (8 p.m., CBS): LL Cool J hosts, with performances by Fun, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Elton John and others. Almost as important: What will they be wearing? (Apparently, nothing too risqué: The network requested stars not expose too much skin at the ceremony.) Ah, family reunions. The love. The tears. The fights to the death.  When “The Walking Dead” (9 p.m., AMC) left off, the Governor was forcing  brothers Daryl and Merle to battle each other.… Read More »

Coming soon: ‘Community’ (and other favorites)

With the seasonal TV slowdown, I thought rather than highlight what’s on this week, I’d let you know when a few of your favorites are returning next month. Dates are subject to change, and I’m sure I’ve left some shows out. But either way, it’s a great time to unclog your DVR to make room for a busy new year: January 4 “Merlin” (10 p.m., Syfy) returns for its fifth and final season. January 6 Jillian is back as season… Read More »

Watch this (week of Dec. 2)

Like that Thanksgiving turkey, the TV schedule has been picked clean, of debuts at least. (January, however, looks to be a very busy month.) So, what to watch? Fortunately, many old favorites are still showing first-run episodes… for now. Here’s a sampling of what’s on this week.  SUNDAY Arguably the best night of TV, on CBS, there are new episodes of “The Amazing Race” (8 p.m.) and “The Good Wife” (9 p.m.), while ABC has a new “Once Upon a… Read More »

Watch this (week of Nov. 18)

This week, it’s all about the Peanuts gang, music awards and the premature onslaught of Christmas programming. Here’s what’s on: SUNDAY “The Walking Dead” (7 p.m., AMC) continues its stellar season, but I’m still reeling from a few weeks back. For those who haven’t caught up, I won’t ruin it. But… wow. Also tonight, “The 40th Anniversary American Music Awards” (8 p.m., ABC) will feature performances by Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Pink, Nicki Minaj and Christina… Read More »

Good news for ‘Dead’ fans

Finally. Cablevision and AMC have reached a deal with Dish Network. As I’ve lamented over the past weeks, the ongoing lawsuit meant Dish subscribers (of which I’m one) had to miss last week’s premiere of “The Walking Dead.” “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” fans, too, were left without access to AMC, which meant Dish subscribers had to download (and pay for) their favorite programs from iTunes or Amazon. But a settlement was just announced, which means that Dish will again… Read More »

Watch this (week of Oct. 14)

This was the week “Community” was supposed to return. NBC, however, decided to (once again) put it on the shelf, announcing it won’t return on Oct. 19 as planned. I guess the bright side is “Whitney’s” return was delayed, too. Without “Community” to look forward to, what IS new? Nothing much. Premieres have tapered off, and now is the time when we start to predict which series will be axed. (Last year, “Whitney” defied my expectations; let’s see if this… Read More »

Watch this (week of Oct. 7)

The premieres have slowed to a trickle, but the CW at least has a big week planned. A quick look at what to watch:  SUNDAY After most of the Fox animated shows returned last week, “The Cleveland Show” (7:30 p.m.) is back.  MONDAY The CW begins its big week by bringing back “90210” (8 p.m.) and “Gossip Girl” (9 p.m.), the latter which is starting its sixth and final season.  TUESDAY “Nikita” (9 p.m.) returns on, you guessed it, the… Read More »

When your shows will return

September is a busy month on TV. While this is the time of year when attention focuses on all those bright and shiny new shows the networks are hoping you will watch, most of us are more eagerly awaiting the return of old favorites. So when will your favorite show return? Here’s a list of what’s premiering when on the networks. ABC Dancing with the Stars, 8 p.m. on Sept. 24 Castle, 10 p.m. on Sept. 24 Private Practice, 10… Read More »

Battle of the shows, part 2

I recently compared several similar-themed shows to see how they measured up against one another. Here’s a look at how, in one reviewer’s opinion anyway, six more shows compare.  Battle of the musicals: NBC’s “Smash” vs. Fox’s “Glee” The soapy drama “Smash” centers around efforts to bring a musical about Marilyn Monroe to Broadway. “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee plays the straight-from-Iowa rookie with the big voice, while Megan Hilty plays the veteran who nabbed the title role (and a… Read More »

Watch this (week of March 18)

Need a break from March Madness? Here are a few options. (If you’re a true NCAA basketball fan, though, you probably won’t have time to watch anything else this week.) SUNDAY “The Walking Dead” ends its second season tonight on AMC. It’s a great time to catch up since AMC is running a marathon leading up to the finale. Also Sunday, the stunning “Frozen Planet” begins its seven-episode run tonight on Discovery and TLC. If you don’t already have a… Read More »

Watch this (week of March 4)

SUNDAY With “Desperate Housewives” ending this season, ABC hopes to launch a new age of camp and catfights with “GCB” (10 p.m.) immediately following “Housewives.” After a few of life’s hard knocks, a former mean girl (Leslie Bibb) returns to Dallas to live with her mom (Annie Potts), where she must deal with the fallout from those bad ol’ days and former frenemies/victims (including one played by Kristin Chenoweth, now bent on revenge). “GCB” is based on the book, “Good… Read More »
