Terror TV II: TCM Rises Again!

Another weekend and another marathon of high quality vintage horror films on Turner Classic Movies; my pick this week is the 1932 film Freaks (trailer here). Tod Browning’s film Freaks offers a window into a world we seldom see these days, the carnival sideshow.  Many of the actors are actual sideshow performers possessing of various physical attributes that fall outside the norm; the film was considered too disturbing for some viewers, and was banned in many locations upon release.  Though… Read More »

My Top 10 Halloween Episodes

Halloween is my favorite holiday, probably because it falls only a few days after my birthday, which means I often got to have Halloween themed costume parties growing up; a pretty cool way for a kid to spend his birthday, thanks mom and dad!  Each year I look forward to the Halloween episodes of the TV programs I watch regularly, since I am planning to write some previews of upcoming series premieres that have a horror and or Halloween friendly… Read More »

When your shows will return

September is a busy month on TV. While this is the time of year when attention focuses on all those bright and shiny new shows the networks are hoping you will watch, most of us are more eagerly awaiting the return of old favorites. So when will your favorite show return? Here’s a list of what’s premiering when on the networks. ABC Dancing with the Stars, 8 p.m. on Sept. 24 Castle, 10 p.m. on Sept. 24 Private Practice, 10… Read More »

Watch this (week of Feb. 19)

SUNDAY Springfield is finally fed up, and the town banishes Homer and clan as “The Simpsons” marks its 500th episode (8 p.m., Fox). (As one of the longest-running shows ever, it’s a wonder the town put up with Homer and Bart this long.) Also Sunday, the 20th (!) season of “The Amazing Race” kicks off with a trek from Santa Barbara, Calif., to Santa Barbara, Argentina. (8 p.m., CBS). Last season was the first I gave up on (call it… Read More »

5 good TV moms… and 5 bad ones

While raising their broods, quintessential moms Carol Brady, Marion Cunningham and June Cleaver remained upbeat, sometimes crossing over into downright perky. But that might be owed only partially to solid maternal instincts and more to a lack of those instincts being seriously tested. I mean, was the insincere Eddie Haskell all that bad when compared with the drug-and-sex-pushing peers today’s TV teens contend with? And sure, Carol Brady had a large family, but she also had help from housekeeper Alice.… Read More »

More Changes in Store

After giving the bunnies the boot earlier in the week, NBC canceled “Free Agents”. Luckier series: Comedies “Up All Night,” “2 Broke Girls” and, unfortunately, “Whitney” have been renewed. Hopefully, “Simpsons” won’t suffer a similar fate. The voice actors and 20th Century Fox Television are haggling over money, and the popular (and expensive) cartoon, which has been running since 1989, is in danger of being canceled. Even if Homer and clan do bid adieu, the series will live on in… Read More »
