Bosch is a pleasant surprise

Original shows are now the name of the game for services such as Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and Netflix with the latter about to release the second season of a House of Cards on Friday. However this past Thursday Amazon stole something of a march on their rival when they rolled out their latest group of pilots for streaming to Amazon Prime subscribers. Unlike Netflix, that produces a complete season, Amazon commissions multiple pilots and then selects which shows to… Read More »

Emmy nominations announced

The Emmy nominations were announced Thursday. While I have no idea which way Emmy voters will go, there are a lot of great nominations – and, of course, a couple of favorites missing from the list. A look at the major categories: Drama series:    “Breaking Bad”(AMC); “Downton Abbey” (PBS);“Game of Thrones” (HBO); “Homeland” (Showtime); “Mad Men” (AMC); and “House of Cards” (Netflix). My take: I’m really rooting for “Breaking Bad” to win this as it heads into its final… Read More »

Watch this (week of April 28)

SUNDAY On the season finale of “The Good Wife” (9 p.m., CBS), everything comes to a head: the outcome of Peter’s gubernatorial run, Cary’s decision to start his own firm, and Alicia’s conflicted feelings for the two men in her life, Peter and Will. Hopefully, there’s enough closure to keep viewers contented until next season, but enough scandal to make us count the days till fall. MONDAY As “Bones” (8 p.m., Fox) concludes its eighth season,  hacker/serial killer Christopher Pelant… Read More »

Watch this (week of April 14)

SUNDAY Don’t let the “new” label on “Once Upon a Time” (8 p.m., ABC) fool you… it’s one of those “what’s happened up to this point” episodes.  Still, if you’re a fan who’s missed a couple of episodes, or want to become a fan of this fairytale-themed serial, than it’s the perfect time to catch up on what’s been going on in Storybrooke.  “The Good Wife” (9 p.m., CBS) is one of the few shows I watch the night it… Read More »

Watch this (week of March 31)

SUNDAY It’s back! As “Game of Thrones” (9 p.m., HBO) kicks off its third season, Daenerys continues her quest for a ship, and Jon Snow finally meets the legendary Mance Ryder. But my favorite part of the show: Peter Dinklage’s portrayal of Tyrion Lannister. If you’re a fan of “The Voice” (7 p.m., NBC), you might want to clear some space on your DVR. The singing competition airs repeats of last week’s fourth-season premiere tonight, with new episodes at 8… Read More »

CBS renews 18 shows

This is the time of year when many series start signing off for the season, with fans not knowing if it will be their last, as the networks prepare for upfronts in mid-May, when new fall schedules are unveiled. Today, fans of CBS shows got a preview of what the network’s fall schedule will be like when CBS announced the renewal of 18  primetime series. Renewed shows include newsmagazines “48 Hours” and “60 Minutes”; reality shows “The Amazing Race,” “Survivor”… Read More »

Watch this (week of March 3)

SUNDAY In the new drama “Red Widow” (9 p.m., ABC), a suburban mom (Radha Mitchell) is thrust into a life of organized crime after her husband is killed. [youtube cZbQHeYLQwQ] On “Amazing Race” (8 p.m., CBS), the contestants are in New Zealand, and an injury threatens to end the race for one pair. After a couple of weeks off, “The Good Wife” (9 p.m., CBS) returns with a new episode that has Elsbeth continuing her defense of Eli against a… Read More »

Watch this (week of Jan. 6)

Now that the holidays are over, the kids are headed back to school and many people have less down-time to watch TV, the winter season kicks off.  Some highlights from this week: SUNDAY The networks kick off the week with the return of many favorites. Among them: Fox’s animated comedy block is all new, starting at 8 p.m. with “The Simpsons,” followed by new episodes of “Bob’s Burgers” (8:30 p.m.),  “Family Guy” (9 p.m.) and “American Dad” (9:30 p.m.). Season… Read More »

Watch this (week of Oct. 28)

This week, it’s all about the World Series, which airs at 5 p.m. on Fox today and, if necessary, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. And on “Monday Night Football,” the 49ers face the Cardinals in Arizona. If you aren’t a sports fan, though, there are a few other highlights. SUNDAY My interest in reality TV has been waning over the past couple of seasons, and with the glut of great TV on Sunday nights, I’ve totally missed mentioning the return of… Read More »

Watch this (week of Sept. 30)

Remember when all the good shows were on Sunday? This week is another of those times, with several favorites returning:  “Once Upon a Time,” (8 p.m., ABC); “Revenge,” (9 p.m., ABC); “The Good Wife,” (9 p.m., CBS) and “The Mentalist,” (10 p.m., CBS). Fox is also relaunching most of its animated comedies, with the return of “The Simpsons” (8 p.m.), “Bob’s Burgers” (8:30 p.m.), and “Family Guy” (9 p.m.) (“The Cleveland Show” returns next week.)
