Watch this (week of May 26)

Hopefully, you’re out enjoying your Memorial Day weekend, because it’s not looking too sunny out there in TV land. Here’s a look at what networks are offering up this week: SUNDAY There are a couple of bright spots on Sunday. HBO premieres its high-profile movie “Behind the Candelabra” (9 p.m., HBO), which stars Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover. And fans of “Arrested Development” get what they want in a big way: Netflix releases 15 new… Read More »

Watch this (week of Feb. 3)

There’s something going on this weekend, specifically today. Let’s see, what was it again? … Ah, yes: The Super Bowl. On Sunday, you might as well just give in and watch, or clean out your DVR. (Also a great day to go shopping… no crowds.) But here’s what’s on the rest of the week MONDAY “Rules of Engagement” (8:30 p.m., CBS) is back for its seventh (!) season. Another medical drama premieres, this one – David E. Kelley’s  “Monday Mornings”… Read More »

Coming soon: ‘Community’ (and other favorites)

With the seasonal TV slowdown, I thought rather than highlight what’s on this week, I’d let you know when a few of your favorites are returning next month. Dates are subject to change, and I’m sure I’ve left some shows out. But either way, it’s a great time to unclog your DVR to make room for a busy new year: January 4 “Merlin” (10 p.m., Syfy) returns for its fifth and final season. January 6 Jillian is back as season… Read More »

Watch this (week of May 13)

Time to say a bunch of goodbyes again this week as a whole slew of shows shutter for the season.  SUNDAY  “Desperate Housewives” (9 p.m., ABC) ends its eight-season run tonight as the women of Wisteria Lane bid farewell for good. In tonight’s episode,  Bree is on trial for murder, Susan’s daughter Julie is about to give birth and Lynette and Tom are on the cusp of reconciliation… or saying goodbye forever. (My money’s on the former). MONDAY Lily went… Read More »

Watch this (week of March 25)

For me, this week is more about counting down… only seven days until the premiere of “Game of Thrones” on HBO. I’ll be watching the usual new episodes of “New Girl,” “Community,” etc… But if you want something a little different: SUNDAY The critically acclaimed “Mad Men” returns to AMC tonight with a two-hour season premiere. (Actually, watch your DVRs on this one, since the debut is listed as being 128 minutes long.) This is one of those shows I… Read More »

Battle of the shows, part 2

I recently compared several similar-themed shows to see how they measured up against one another. Here’s a look at how, in one reviewer’s opinion anyway, six more shows compare.  Battle of the musicals: NBC’s “Smash” vs. Fox’s “Glee” The soapy drama “Smash” centers around efforts to bring a musical about Marilyn Monroe to Broadway. “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee plays the straight-from-Iowa rookie with the big voice, while Megan Hilty plays the veteran who nabbed the title role (and a… Read More »

Watch this (week of Feb. 5)

SUNDAY: There’s something going on this weekend that a few people might want to watch. Let’s see if I can remember what it is… I know it involves a sport of some kind. Ah, yes … the Super Bowl. Maybe you’ve heard of it? The New England Patriots face off against the New York Giants at 3 p.m. Sunday on NBC. If you’re not sick of singing competitions yet, the season premiere of  “The Voice” immediately follows the big game.… Read More »

Time for midseason

In a previous post, I previewed Fox’s midseason line-up, which includes “Alcatraz” and “The Finder.” Here’s a look at several other shows debuting soon: “Rob” (Jan. 12, CBS): For those who own the “Deuce Bigalow” boxed set, are related to Rob Schneider or only watch TV shows with three letters in the title, then have I got a show for you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLYl15-9CRk “The Firm” (Jan. 8, NBC): Based on the John Grisham book, this legal drama stars Josh Lucas as… Read More »
