Best, worst of the past week

by TV

A look back at the best and worst in the past week of TV, as well as a sneak peek at what’s to come. Highlights1. “Rescue Me.” A few weeks ago we saw Callie Thorne’s Emmy clip. This past week we saw Denis Leary’s. Though the setup was a bit contrived, his angry, self-defensive, guilt-riddled conversation with his dead family members while in a drunken stupor was absolutely gripping. Turns out … Read More »

Goodbye to ‘Reaper’?

by TV

Last night’s “Reaper” finale was a mixed bag, much like the series’ two-season run. The show’s always been likable, but it’s never quite lived up to its potential. Like Sam, it’s been an underachiever. But that hint of potential was always intriguing enough to keep me hooked. It felt like the writers were always unsure where the show was going. Was it a supernatural thriller? Yeah, sometimes. A slapstick comedy? Sure. A … Read More »

Best and worst of the past week

by TV

A look back at the best and worst in the past week of TV, as well as a sneak peek at what’s to come. Highlights 1. “Gossip Girl.” And so ends my first season as an inexplicable fan of this show. The finale offered mysteries (Is Serena too cool to wear a graduation cap?), fakeouts (Eric’s boyfriend Jonathan as Gossip Girl? Nahh.), cliffhangers (Blair and Georgina NYU dorm-mates?!?) and shockers (Chuck … Read More »

Fanboys rejoice over network renewals

by TV

I know this might sound crazy, but suddenly it seems like networks are actually listening to audiences. Credit the power of the fanboy for a cluster of just-announced series renewals. Despite low ratings, smart shows with loyal — and vocal — viewers are on the comeback trail. Fox might have pulled the biggest surprise, giving “Dollhouse” a second season. It’s been treated shoddily at times, but maybe now that season-ending 13th … Read More »

Best & worst of the past week

by TV

A look back at the best and worst in the past week of TV, as well as a sneak peek at what’s to come. Highlights 1. “Lost.” I had super high expectations for the season finale, and they were met. Surpassed, even. The introduction of Jacob and his evil counterpart made all the previous conflicts (Losties/Others, Hostiles/Dharma, Ben/Widmore) seem insignificant in comparison. And what’s it say when Juliet’s detonating an H-bomb (a … Read More »

Big night for “Reaper”

by TV

Maybe the “save our show” campaign is paying off for “Reaper” — according to TVGuide.com, the show’s ratings were up 19 percent last night. Nice as that sounds, it still drew more than a million fewer viewers than “According to Jim” on ABC, which is just sad. I swear I thought that show got canceled like three years ago. Seriously, who watches that? But hey, maybe a late-season rally really can create … Read More »

It’s ‘Save Our Show!’ time

by TV

It’s that time of year again. Networks will be announcing their fall lineups next month, and it’s getting to be do-or-die time for shows that are on the bubble and may or may not be renewed. So start your e-mail-writing campaigns, fanboys and girls, here’s a look at the most endangered shows. Fox “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” has reportedly already fallen to the ax this week. “Dollhouse” is about to … Read More »

About last night: “Reaper,” “Rescue Me,” “My Boys”

by TV

Tuesdays have suddenly become my favorite nights for TV. Between “Reaper,” “My Boys” and “Rescue Me,” there’s a little bit of everything — supernatural thrills, comedy and gripping drama. Things kicked off with another good episode of “Reaper.” Mostly because it had a lot of Nina and saw the goodbye of Kristen. Nina is fast becoming my favorite character, she rocks every scene she’s in with that sweet, naive, yet homicidal personality. Loved her … Read More »

Best and worst of the past week

by TV

A look back at the best and worst of the past week on TV, and a look ahead to what’s coming up.Highlights 1. “Lost.” Great episode, aside from the cheesy Smoke Monster and ridiculous wigs. Ben-centric episodes are always good, and this was no different. Nice to get a few answers about Ben’s history and what went down at the marina in L.A. (Does anyone else suspect we haven’t seen … Read More »

Best, worst of the past week

by TV

A look back at the best and worst of the past week on TV, and a look ahead to what’s coming up. Highlights 1. The last five minutes of “Lost.” It was a kinda slow, uneventful episode that didn’t raise or answer many questions. One of those setting-the-stage episodes. Until the last scene. It’s not every day you see a supposed good guy shoot a child and be pretty much justified in … Read More »
