Emmy nominations announced

The Emmy nominations were announced Thursday. While I have no idea which way Emmy voters will go, there are a lot of great nominations – and, of course, a couple of favorites missing from the list. A look at the major categories: Drama series:    “Breaking Bad”(AMC); “Downton Abbey” (PBS);“Game of Thrones” (HBO); “Homeland” (Showtime); “Mad Men” (AMC); and “House of Cards” (Netflix). My take: I’m really rooting for “Breaking Bad” to win this as it heads into its final… Read More »

Watch this (week of May 12)

The must-see event of the week: “The Office” wraps up after nine seasons with a retrospective and supersized episode.  Here are some other highlights for the week: SUNDAY A winner will be picked on “Survivor: Caramoan – Fans vs.  Favorites” (8 p.m., CBS). Following is the traditional reunion special, where Jeff spends about a minute interviewing earlier rejects we’ve long since forgotten about, and the rest of the time talking to or about the final three. Emily reconsiders her quest… Read More »

Watch this (week of March 31)

SUNDAY It’s back! As “Game of Thrones” (9 p.m., HBO) kicks off its third season, Daenerys continues her quest for a ship, and Jon Snow finally meets the legendary Mance Ryder. But my favorite part of the show: Peter Dinklage’s portrayal of Tyrion Lannister. If you’re a fan of “The Voice” (7 p.m., NBC), you might want to clear some space on your DVR. The singing competition airs repeats of last week’s fourth-season premiere tonight, with new episodes at 8… Read More »

Watch this (week of Jan. 6)

Now that the holidays are over, the kids are headed back to school and many people have less down-time to watch TV, the winter season kicks off.  Some highlights from this week: SUNDAY The networks kick off the week with the return of many favorites. Among them: Fox’s animated comedy block is all new, starting at 8 p.m. with “The Simpsons,” followed by new episodes of “Bob’s Burgers” (8:30 p.m.),  “Family Guy” (9 p.m.) and “American Dad” (9:30 p.m.). Season… Read More »

Watch this (week of Nov. 18)

This week, it’s all about the Peanuts gang, music awards and the premature onslaught of Christmas programming. Here’s what’s on: SUNDAY “The Walking Dead” (7 p.m., AMC) continues its stellar season, but I’m still reeling from a few weeks back. For those who haven’t caught up, I won’t ruin it. But… wow. Also tonight, “The 40th Anniversary American Music Awards” (8 p.m., ABC) will feature performances by Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Pink, Nicki Minaj and Christina… Read More »

Should you join ‘Revolution’?

To kick off the fall TV season, I thought I’d take a look at one new series, a couple returning favorites and what I’m most looking forward to watching next week. New show: “Revolution” (10 p.m. Monday, NBC) was one of two shows I was most looking forward to watching. (The other is “Last Resort,” premiering next Thursday.) It was created by Eric Kripke, the guy who also brought us the CW’s “Supernatural.” The pilot episode of “Revolution” began with… Read More »

When your shows will return

September is a busy month on TV. While this is the time of year when attention focuses on all those bright and shiny new shows the networks are hoping you will watch, most of us are more eagerly awaiting the return of old favorites. So when will your favorite show return? Here’s a list of what’s premiering when on the networks. ABC Dancing with the Stars, 8 p.m. on Sept. 24 Castle, 10 p.m. on Sept. 24 Private Practice, 10… Read More »

Watch this (week of May 6)

This week is a busy one for season finales, so here’s a look at some shows that are ending (for now): SUNDAY “The Amazing Race” (8 p.m., CBS) ends with a two-hour finale.  MONDAY Martha Stewart guest-stars on “2 Broke Girls,” (8 p.m., CBS) as Max and Caroline try to get her interested in their fledgling cupcake business. Hopefully, she’ll class up the jokes a little bit. On “Castle” (10 p.m., ABC), Beckett and Castle look into tip about the… Read More »

Battle of the shows, round 1

Click the remote control a couple of times, and you’re likely to land on yet another show about doctors, lawyers or cops. (It’s even money that any time of day that you turn on the TV, you’ll be able to find an episode from the “CSI” and “Law and Order” franchises alone.) Forget flattery… for networks, imitation is often the surest way to make money. Not that it always goes well. (Anyone remember Rob Lowe’s legal drama “Lyon’s Den”? How… Read More »

Watch this (week of Feb. 19)

SUNDAY Springfield is finally fed up, and the town banishes Homer and clan as “The Simpsons” marks its 500th episode (8 p.m., Fox). (As one of the longest-running shows ever, it’s a wonder the town put up with Homer and Bart this long.) Also Sunday, the 20th (!) season of “The Amazing Race” kicks off with a trek from Santa Barbara, Calif., to Santa Barbara, Argentina. (8 p.m., CBS). Last season was the first I gave up on (call it… Read More »

Shows to savor

TV and food…two things I love. So naturally, I sometimes think in ways that combine the two. Here’s a sampling of what’s on my TV menu these days. Appetizers: These shows aren’t the main course, but rather something you can watch when you don’t want something too heavy. Maybe you want to pass the time before the kids go to sleep, or while the pasta for dinner is boiling, or between errands while pairing up the socks in the laundry… Read More »

What started strong, and what flopped?

By Heather Chavez WHAT I’M WATCHING THIS WEEK: Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott star in “American Horror Story,” premiering Wednesday on FX. Though Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy created “Glee,” don’t expect show tunes and slushies in the hallway. Britton and McDermott play a married couple who move with their daughter into a house with a dark history. I suspect this violent show will be one viewers either love or hate. As a huge fan of Britton and the risk-taking… Read More »
