Emmy nominations announced

The Emmy nominations were announced Thursday. While I have no idea which way Emmy voters will go, there are a lot of great nominations – and, of course, a couple of favorites missing from the list. A look at the major categories: Drama series:    “Breaking Bad”(AMC); “Downton Abbey” (PBS);“Game of Thrones” (HBO); “Homeland” (Showtime); “Mad Men” (AMC); and “House of Cards” (Netflix). My take: I’m really rooting for “Breaking Bad” to win this as it heads into its final… Read More »

Watch this (week of June 23)

SUNDAY New series “Crossing Lines” (9 p.m., NBC)  stars William Fichtner as a former police officer who joins in the global search for a serial killer. “Mad Men” (9 p.m., AMC) ends for the season. Lifetime brings back “Drop Dead Diva” (9 p.m.), before premiering new series “Devious Maids.” (Title kinda says it all.) Bristol Palin and Melissa Rivers trade families in the season premiere of “Celebrity Wife Swap” (8 p.m., ABC). It’s followed by “Whodunnit?” (9 p.m.), a reality… Read More »

Good news for ‘Dead’ fans

Finally. Cablevision and AMC have reached a deal with Dish Network. As I’ve lamented over the past weeks, the ongoing lawsuit meant Dish subscribers (of which I’m one) had to miss last week’s premiere of “The Walking Dead.” “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” fans, too, were left without access to AMC, which meant Dish subscribers had to download (and pay for) their favorite programs from iTunes or Amazon. But a settlement was just announced, which means that Dish will again… Read More »

Watch this (week of March 25)

For me, this week is more about counting down… only seven days until the premiere of “Game of Thrones” on HBO. I’ll be watching the usual new episodes of “New Girl,” “Community,” etc… But if you want something a little different: SUNDAY The critically acclaimed “Mad Men” returns to AMC tonight with a two-hour season premiere. (Actually, watch your DVRs on this one, since the debut is listed as being 128 minutes long.) This is one of those shows I… Read More »

5 good TV moms… and 5 bad ones

While raising their broods, quintessential moms Carol Brady, Marion Cunningham and June Cleaver remained upbeat, sometimes crossing over into downright perky. But that might be owed only partially to solid maternal instincts and more to a lack of those instincts being seriously tested. I mean, was the insincere Eddie Haskell all that bad when compared with the drug-and-sex-pushing peers today’s TV teens contend with? And sure, Carol Brady had a large family, but she also had help from housekeeper Alice.… Read More »

Mad Men? Definitely!

OMG! Must See! Mad Men:  So, apparently, I’ve been living under a rock and missing this amazing show.  Mad Men is set in the 1960s in New York City–Madison Avenue, specifically. It focuses on the lives of the power hungry men in the advertising world and their much too dedicated secretaries.  While the men are hard at work writing ads for everything from cigarettes to department stores, the women are at home dutifully keeping house and providing meals for their families.  Their… Read More »
