Watch this (week of May 13)

Time to say a bunch of goodbyes again this week as a whole slew of shows shutter for the season.  SUNDAY  “Desperate Housewives” (9 p.m., ABC) ends its eight-season run tonight as the women of Wisteria Lane bid farewell for good. In tonight’s episode,  Bree is on trial for murder, Susan’s daughter Julie is about to give birth and Lynette and Tom are on the cusp of reconciliation… or saying goodbye forever. (My money’s on the former). MONDAY Lily went… Read More »

Watch this (week of April 8)

SUNDAY As “Desperate Housewives” takes a break leading up to its final episodes, ABC airs back-to-back episodes of its new comedy “GCB” (9 p.m.) On Showtime, not one, not two, but THREE series return tonight: “Nurse Jackie” (9 p.m.), “The Big C” (9:30 p.m.) and “The Borgias” (10 p.m.).  TUESDAY “Glee” (8 p.m., Fox) returns. Who knew Blaine had a brother? Turns out he does, and tonight, his brother comes for a visit. Hopefully, we’ll find also out what happened… Read More »

Battle of the shows, part 2

I recently compared several similar-themed shows to see how they measured up against one another. Here’s a look at how, in one reviewer’s opinion anyway, six more shows compare.  Battle of the musicals: NBC’s “Smash” vs. Fox’s “Glee” The soapy drama “Smash” centers around efforts to bring a musical about Marilyn Monroe to Broadway. “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee plays the straight-from-Iowa rookie with the big voice, while Megan Hilty plays the veteran who nabbed the title role (and a… Read More »

Watch this (week of Feb. 19)

SUNDAY Springfield is finally fed up, and the town banishes Homer and clan as “The Simpsons” marks its 500th episode (8 p.m., Fox). (As one of the longest-running shows ever, it’s a wonder the town put up with Homer and Bart this long.) Also Sunday, the 20th (!) season of “The Amazing Race” kicks off with a trek from Santa Barbara, Calif., to Santa Barbara, Argentina. (8 p.m., CBS). Last season was the first I gave up on (call it… Read More »

Watch this (week of Jan. 29)

So… you have a week to kill until the Super Bowl. What’s on TV between now and then?  Sun., Jan. 29: “Undercover Boss” (8 p.m. CBS): Grab a glass of wine and the remote… the long-awaited (in Sonoma County at least) episode featuring Kendall Jackson’s president, Rick Tigner, airs Sunday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe0PODre0-0 After “Undercover Boss,” don’t change the channel: On “The Good Wife” (9 p.m., CBS), Wendy Scott-Carr intensifies her campaign against Will in an effort to send him to prison.… Read More »

SAG award TV nominees

The Screen Actors Guild announced their nominations, including for TV. Among them: Drama ensemble: HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “Boardwalk Empire,” AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Showtime’s “Dexter.” Comedy ensemble: “Modern Family,” “The Office,” “30 Rock,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Glee.” If I were to pick a favorite from this group, I’d have to go with “Modern Family,” but all of but one of these shows is in my DVR list. (Sorry, “30 Rock.” When I’ve… Read More »

Shows to savor

TV and food…two things I love. So naturally, I sometimes think in ways that combine the two. Here’s a sampling of what’s on my TV menu these days. Appetizers: These shows aren’t the main course, but rather something you can watch when you don’t want something too heavy. Maybe you want to pass the time before the kids go to sleep, or while the pasta for dinner is boiling, or between errands while pairing up the socks in the laundry… Read More »
