Watch this (week of April 14)

SUNDAY Don’t let the “new” label on “Once Upon a Time” (8 p.m., ABC) fool you… it’s one of those “what’s happened up to this point” episodes.  Still, if you’re a fan who’s missed a couple of episodes, or want to become a fan of this fairytale-themed serial, than it’s the perfect time to catch up on what’s been going on in Storybrooke.  “The Good Wife” (9 p.m., CBS) is one of the few shows I watch the night it… Read More »

Watch this (week of March 3)

SUNDAY In the new drama “Red Widow” (9 p.m., ABC), a suburban mom (Radha Mitchell) is thrust into a life of organized crime after her husband is killed. On “Amazing Race” (8 p.m., CBS), the contestants are in New Zealand, and an injury threatens to end the race for one pair. After a couple of weeks off, “The Good Wife” (9 p.m., CBS) returns with a new episode that has Elsbeth continuing her defense of Eli against a federal probe… Read More »

Watch this (week of Jan. 20)

On Sunday, it’s all about football. With two big games on, will there really be time to watch anything else? Other than that, there are a couple of debuts and a swan song. Here are the highlights:  SUNDAY The San Francisco 49ers face the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC championship at noon on Fox. Also, the AFC championship will be decided as the New England Patriots battle the Baltimore Ravens at 3:30 p.m. on CBS. MONDAY Violent drama “The Following”… Read More »

Watch this (week of Nov. 18)

This week, it’s all about the Peanuts gang, music awards and the premature onslaught of Christmas programming. Here’s what’s on: SUNDAY “The Walking Dead” (7 p.m., AMC) continues its stellar season, but I’m still reeling from a few weeks back. For those who haven’t caught up, I won’t ruin it. But… wow. Also tonight, “The 40th Anniversary American Music Awards” (8 p.m., ABC) will feature performances by Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Pink, Nicki Minaj and Christina… Read More »

Should you join ‘Revolution’?

To kick off the fall TV season, I thought I’d take a look at one new series, a couple returning favorites and what I’m most looking forward to watching next week. New show: “Revolution” (10 p.m. Monday, NBC) was one of two shows I was most looking forward to watching. (The other is “Last Resort,” premiering next Thursday.) It was created by Eric Kripke, the guy who also brought us the CW’s “Supernatural.” The pilot episode of “Revolution” began with… Read More »

When your shows will return

September is a busy month on TV. While this is the time of year when attention focuses on all those bright and shiny new shows the networks are hoping you will watch, most of us are more eagerly awaiting the return of old favorites. So when will your favorite show return? Here’s a list of what’s premiering when on the networks. ABC Dancing with the Stars, 8 p.m. on Sept. 24 Castle, 10 p.m. on Sept. 24 Private Practice, 10… Read More »

Watch this (week of May 20)

There are a few more finales this week, and a couple of reality show returns. MONDAY Probably the  most notable finale of the week: After eight seasons, “House” concludes with a one-hour retrospective followed at 9 p.m. by the series finale, with House facing six months in jail while his best (only?) friend, Wilson, will likely be dead from cancer in five. TUESDAY After performances on Monday, a winner is announced Tuesday on “Dancing with the Stars” (8 p.m., ABC)… Read More »

Watch this (week of May 13)

Time to say a bunch of goodbyes again this week as a whole slew of shows shutter for the season.  SUNDAY  “Desperate Housewives” (9 p.m., ABC) ends its eight-season run tonight as the women of Wisteria Lane bid farewell for good. In tonight’s episode,  Bree is on trial for murder, Susan’s daughter Julie is about to give birth and Lynette and Tom are on the cusp of reconciliation… or saying goodbye forever. (My money’s on the former). MONDAY Lily went… Read More »

SUNDAY As “Desperate Housewives” takes a break leading up to its final episodes, ABC airs back-to-back episodes of its new comedy “GCB” (9 p.m.) On Showtime, not one, not two, but THREE series return tonight: “Nurse Jackie” (9 p.m.), “The Big C” (9:30 p.m.) and “The Borgias” (10 p.m.).  TUESDAY “Glee” (8 p.m., Fox) returns. Who knew Blaine had a brother? Turns out he does, and tonight, his brother comes for a visit. Hopefully, we’ll find also out what happened… Read More »

Battle of the shows, part 2

I recently compared several similar-themed shows to see how they measured up against one another. Here’s a look at how, in one reviewer’s opinion anyway, six more shows compare.  Battle of the musicals: NBC’s “Smash” vs. Fox’s “Glee” The soapy drama “Smash” centers around efforts to bring a musical about Marilyn Monroe to Broadway. “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee plays the straight-from-Iowa rookie with the big voice, while Megan Hilty plays the veteran who nabbed the title role (and a… Read More »

Watch this (week of Feb. 19)

SUNDAY Springfield is finally fed up, and the town banishes Homer and clan as “The Simpsons” marks its 500th episode (8 p.m., Fox). (As one of the longest-running shows ever, it’s a wonder the town put up with Homer and Bart this long.) Also Sunday, the 20th (!) season of “The Amazing Race” kicks off with a trek from Santa Barbara, Calif., to Santa Barbara, Argentina. (8 p.m., CBS). Last season was the first I gave up on (call it… Read More »

So… you have a week to kill until the Super Bowl. What’s on TV between now and then?  Sun., Jan. 29: “Undercover Boss” (8 p.m. CBS): Grab a glass of wine and the remote… the long-awaited (in Sonoma County at least) episode featuring Kendall Jackson’s president, Rick Tigner, airs Sunday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe0PODre0-0 After “Undercover Boss,” don’t change the channel: On “The Good Wife” (9 p.m., CBS), Wendy Scott-Carr intensifies her campaign against Will in an effort to send him to prison.… Read More »
