Emmy nominations announced

The Emmy nominations were announced Thursday. While I have no idea which way Emmy voters will go, there are a lot of great nominations – and, of course, a couple of favorites missing from the list. A look at the major categories: Drama series:    “Breaking Bad”(AMC); “Downton Abbey” (PBS);“Game of Thrones” (HBO); “Homeland” (Showtime); “Mad Men” (AMC); and “House of Cards” (Netflix). Watch this (week of Jan. 13)

SUNDAY HBO brings back  “Girls” (9 p.m., HBO) and “Enlightened” (9:30 p.m., HBO) for their second seasons. Will the critically acclaimed “Girls” be able to hold on to its buzz? On Showtime, three series return: “Shameless” (9 p.m.), “House of Lies” (10 p.m.) and “Californication” (10:30 p.m.).  MONDAY “Sex and the City” prequel “The Carrie Diaries” (8 p.m., CW) debuts as a teen Carrie Bradshaw falls in love with New York for the very first time. Coming soon: ‘Community’ (and other favorites)

With the seasonal TV slowdown, I thought rather than highlight what’s on this week, I’d let you know when a few of your favorites are returning next month.
