Goodbye Breaking Bad

Several years ago I was the best man at my brother’s wedding, I wrote a speech and practiced it in front of the mirror enough times I thought I would be ready when the moment arrived, instead, when I was handed the microphone I got out about three words and started to cry and had to cut my speech short; emotion trumped preparation and I was unable to communicate the message I wanted to share. I am a little concerned… Read More »

My TV Picks September 9 – 15

As I mentioned last week, we are at the slow beginning of the fall TV premiere season; the following are my picks for new shows this week. Sons of Anarchy (FX 10 PM Tuesday) Bikers, drugs, thugs and Charlie Hunnam, what more could we want?  I enjoy this program for the excellent writing, and many talented actors.  Hunnam in particular is a pleasure to watch, I have thought highly of him from Nicholas Nickleby straight through to Raleigh Becket in… Read More »

My TV Picks September 2 – 8

TV Scoop readers it is with great excitement that I declare the fall TV premiere season is upon us; this week and next offer just a smattering of premieres but the following weeks will bring a torrent of new programs and returning favorites.  This month also marks the end of Dexter and Breaking Bad; in all, September is a great time to be a TV viewer. Cold Justice (TNT 10PM Tuesday) From producer Dick Wolf comes this new true crime… Read More »

My TV Picks August 26 – September 1

Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (Food Network, 9:30 PM Monday) Local legend Guy Fieri travels the country looking for great food at reasonable prices, I am a regular viewer, and I make episodes like this week’s that feature Bay Area restaurants a top priority; if it weren’t for DDD I would have never discovered two of my Sonoma County favorites, Cafe Citti and Willie Bird’s Restaurant. Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family, 8 PM Tuesday) Take the fashion sense of 90210, the… Read More »

Watch This Weekend 8/23 – 8/25

Friday – We Were There: The March On Washington – An Oral History (CNN, 10 PM). If you want to hear about real life drama, sacrifice, courage and commitment, tune in for firsthand accounts of event organizers and participants.  I watched CNN’s recent program on Richard Nixon and found it to be informative and entertaining, I have high hopes for this documentary as well. Saturday – Hell on Wheels (AMC, 9 PM).  We are only in the third week of… Read More »

My TV Picks August 19 – 25

Fantomworks, (Discovery, 10PM Monday) Full disclosure, I am a “car guy” and this program is great if you, like me, love cars; the cool thing is if you aren’t much of a car person this show is still pretty good. Fantomworks, unlike many programs of this ilk, is not full of invented drama or pranks or people screaming at each other. What it is full of is some very talented people practicing their craft at the highest level; how can… Read More »

Top 6 TV pairings

In honor of the return of “Breaking Bad” tonight, I thought I’d take a look at some of TV’s top pairings. Whether it’s a love affair, family bond, friendship or two people on opposite sides of the law, these couples provide the foundations of their shows. Without them, the shows would be much less entertaining, and possibly fizzle entirely. The list isn’t all-inclusive – I’ve limited it to six of my favorites, and I’ve only considered shows currently airing. (Sorry,… Read More »

What’s on this summer?

What I’m most looking forward to as the summer season kicks in to high gear:  “Breaking Bad” and “Burn Notice” start their final seasons, “True Blood” returns, and the Stephen King miniseries “Under the Dome” premieres. Also, on USA, fans get to see what happens after The Kiss on both “Covert Affairs” and “Suits.” There is also the chance to watch the final episodes of several canceled shows as the networks burn off episodes before starting fresh in fall. That… Read More »

Good news for ‘Dead’ fans

Finally. Cablevision and AMC have reached a deal with Dish Network. As I’ve lamented over the past weeks, the ongoing lawsuit meant Dish subscribers (of which I’m one) had to miss last week’s premiere of “The Walking Dead.” “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” fans, too, were left without access to AMC, which meant Dish subscribers had to download (and pay for) their favorite programs from iTunes or Amazon. But a settlement was just announced, which means that Dish will again… Read More »

Top 8 summer 2012 TV shows to watch

Not too long ago, summer used to be the place where TV reruns would live, along with lots of lame basic cable (and premium-channel) dreck that was barely watchable. Then that changed as shows like The Sopranos, Mad Men and others all gained big followings and ran whenever their networks wanted to run them. The operating theory wasn’t so much to avoid the network juggernauts (ha! almost sounds quaint nowadays), but the shows were that good and had such cult… Read More »

SAG award TV nominees

The Screen Actors Guild announced their nominations, including for TV. Among them: Drama ensemble: HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “Boardwalk Empire,” AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Showtime’s “Dexter.” Comedy ensemble: “Modern Family,” “The Office,” “30 Rock,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Glee.” If I were to pick a favorite from this group, I’d have to go with “Modern Family,” but all of but one of these shows is in my DVR list. (Sorry, “30 Rock.” When I’ve… Read More »
