Viewers who are sick and tired of “Top Chef” contestants consistently whining about (and then botching) dessert courses and belittling pastry chefs may be heartened by the news that “Top Chef Just Desserts” is on the way. Assuming, of course, that you aren’t already burned out on (a) the “Top Chef” franchise and (b) baking competition shows. But this one sounds pretty good.
The new reality series will be hosted by the lovely Gail Simmons (who’ll undoubtedly be soooo much less annoying than Padma or Kelly Choi) and is set to debut Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 11 p.m. on Bravo. Simmons, a veteran of Food & Wine magazine and “Top Chef,” will be joined on the judges panel by uber hipster and James Beard award-winner Johnny Iuzzini, classy SF chef/Beard award-winner/DJ Hubert Keller (woooo!) and DailyCandy.com editor Dannielle Kyrillos.
There’ll be a few Bay Area connections in the competition:
— Keller, who runs Fleur de Lys and Burger Bar in San Francisco.
— Yigit Pura, a Turkish native and veteran of the San Francisco dessert scene (Postrio and Gary Danko; he’s now executive pastry chef at Taste Catering and Event Planning in SF).
— Tim Nugent of Oakland, executive pastry chef at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in Union Square. He’s worked at SF’s Acquerello and Zuni Cafe and appeared on KRON’s “Bay Cafe.”
–Morgan Wilson, who now works in Dallas but was born in Sonora and started out in SF, at Essex Supper Club and EOS Restaurant and Wine Bar.

So will you be tuning in? Hey, at the very least, it’s got to be an improvement over the current season of “Top Chef.”
