Watch it

“How I Met Your Mother” (8 p.m., CBS). Season premiere. So now Barney and Robin are knockin’ boots. Better hope that development doesn’t ruin the show (cough cough, “Moonlighting”!). Ted also teaches his first class, and his future baby mama is tied to that somewhere.

“Gossip Girl” (9 p.m, The CW). Blair, Dan and Vanessa start their first day at NYU, and Blair finds out her arch-enemy (the awesomely evil Georgina) is her new dorm-mate. And the scheming begins . . .

“Big Bang Theory” (9:30, CBS). Season premiere. I always thought this show looked kinda stupid, so I never watched it. But with all the buzz its been getting, maybe I’m missing out on something. So I’ll check it out.

“Madventures” (7 and 7:30 p.m, Travel Channel).  Series premiere. A Finnish gonzo travel show, one part Anthony Bourdain and two parts “Jackass,” that has its hosts going to crazy places doing crazy things. Case in point — the description for tonight’s 11:30 episode reads: “Riku and Tunna drink cobra blood and fire bazookas while traveling in Southeast Asia.” Well of course they do! I caught the preview episode a few months ago, and it’s pretty entertaining.

Other season premieres

“House” (8 p.m., Fox). Not one of my shows, but I hear this is a pretty good 2-hour episode that has House in a mental hospital.

“Castle” (10 p.m., ABC). Another show I don’t watch, but it seems harmless enough. Tonight Castle tries to solve the mystery of a dead man in a tree while dealing with his book deadline.

Skip it

“Heroes” (8 p.m., NBC). I’m sorry, but if you’re still watching this, you’re a sucker. This show was fantastic its first season, but has completely fallen off the rails since. Really a shame. I gave it chance after chance, but after two solid years of disappointments, I had to stop.

“Accidentally on Purpose” (8:30 p.m., CBS). This just sounds awful. The one interesting bit: It’s based on the life of Contra Costa Times movie critic Mary Pohls, who got knocked up after a one-night stand. But this looks like a total cookie-cutter sitcom.
