If you’ve been watching those last few episodes of “Pushing Daisies” that ABC is burning off (last episode is this Saturday) and have a hankering for more quirky fun along those lines, then check out “Wonderfalls” on DVD. It’s another series by “Daisies” creator Bryan Fuller that aired briefly on Fox in 2004, and falls in the brilliant-but-canceled category.

Canadian actress Caroline Dhavernas plays Jaye, a twentysomething slacker with a useless Ivy League degree in philosophy who lives in a mobile home and works at a souvenir shop at Niagara Falls. Inanimate animals (a lion keychain, a lawn flamingo, a trophy fish) somehow talk to her, compelling her into taking seemingly random actions that end up turning into good deeds. Jaye, of course, would rather ignore them and have a beer. Is she crazy? Getting messages from God? Or just drunk? It’s a weird premise, but it works really well. The fact that Jaye’s a bit of a misanthrope adds a good bit of caustic comedy to what could otherwise be a sickly sweet show, a la “Joan of Arcadia.”

Co-stars include Lee Pace (the Pie Man from “Pushing Daisies”) as Jaye’s lazy brother; Tracie Thoms (“Cold Case”) as Jaye’s best friend, a waitress at the local bar; and Tyron Leitso as Eric, the new bartender who Jaye falls for. There’s also a whole cast of quirky recurring characters, much like “Pushing Daisies.”

It’s a smart series with rapid-fire dialogue and razor-sharp wit. Deliciously snarky, cynical yet cute, at times fantastical and very often hilarious (like finding out why Jaye’s sister has short fingernails), it’s a highly entertaining show that was unfairly overlooked by most people during its brief run.

The full 13-episode season is available on DVD. And the finale even wraps things up fairly well, so it’s not like you’ll be left hanging. It’s also got a catchy theme song (“I Wonder Why the Wonder Falls” by former XTC member Andy Partridge) that will stick in your head for days upon end.
